Migration pressure on EU from Middle East and Africa expected to grow after coronavirus movement restrictions lifted

The European Union will find itself under renewed migration pressure as coronavirus movement restrictions are lifted and people smuggling on the Balkans route is expected to rise anew, the Vienna-based International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) said in its latest update.

The report, compiled by Martin Hofmann, warns that by autumn, the number of migrants seeking to enter the EU will again have reached the levels of the previous year when there was a surge in migrants from Venezuela and Columbia, who submitted asylum requests in various EU member states. The surge from the two South American countries was due to growing social and political problems in those countries and the fact that their citizens did not require visas to travel to Spain before the movement restrictions.

The ICMPD report also stated that the negative economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic could also be a contributing factor in the rise of migration, as more people will be left in untenable economic conditions and even many members of the well-schooled middle classes of Africa and the Middle East may try their luck by attempting to reach the EU.

Morocco and Libya will probably take center stage, while people smuggling on the Balkans route — a lucrative proposition for organized crime groups — may surge again. At the same time, Turkey has once again threatened to send the country’s estimated 4 million migrants to Europe once the coronavirus crisis ends, which has prompted Greece to seal its land border with Turkey by expanding fencing across the entire Greek side of the Evros River.

Slovenia says 10,000 migrants are seeking to enter EU on Balkans route

Hofmann said a lot will depend on how individual EU member states will regulate foreigners’ access to their labor markets, but it is also likely that the more expensive or hazardous migration routes — such as the Mediterranean — will also see increased traffic.

The ICMPD report also stated that actual migrant numbers will depend on a significant degree on the amount the EU is willing to pay Turkey to keep migration in check. One day before the report was released, Austrian Minister of Interior Karl Nehammer, during a meeting with the region’s ministers of interior, proposed that the countries along the Balkans migration route be given additional support to protect their borders.

The meeting was attended by relevant officials of Austria, Bosnia-Hezregovina, Croatia, Hungary, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia, and it was indirectly triggered by Slovenian police reports warning that currently more than 10,000 people are seeking to enter the EU via the Balkans route. Slovenia has responded by sending over 1,000 police officers to the Croatian border.

In the past two weeks, as Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina gradually ended their respective movement restrictions, the number of migrants on the move has increased significantly.

Just before the outbreak of Covid-19, Frontex, the EU’s border agency, said that illegal border crossing had increased by 27 percent year-on-year.

The Real History of Antifa

The dark history of the radical Left’s enforcement arm.

With riots and civil unrest metastasizing across the United States, the president declared he intends to designate Antifa as a terrorist group. Predictably, the talking heads rushed out to declarethat Antifa doesn’t really exist, and even if it did the president couldn’t possibly target it using that legal designation. They argueAntifa is an amorphous blob of discontents, not a functioning organization, and certainly not one which could be designated and targeted for concentrated counterterrorism enforcement.

As usual, the Twitterati don’t know what they are talking about. Reality is both simpler and more complex.

To begin at the beginning: Antifa—real name: Antifaschisitsche Aktion—was born during the street-fights of the 1932 Weimar Republic. It was founded by the Stalinist Communist Party of Germany (KPD), although various Communist “anti-fascist defense” units were associated with the KPD much earlier.

Anti-fascist Action’s sole purpose was to help the KPD combat other political parties for control of the streets in the revolutionary politics of the rapidly failing Weimar Republic.

And yes, they fought the Nazis.

But they also fought liberal parties, conservative parties, and anyone and everyone who got in their way. While these early antecedents were short-lived, it is useful to view Antifa in this context. More than anything, Antifa exists to serve as a tool of revolutionary politics in a failed (or failing) state.

Antifa would reestablish itself in the early 1980s, also in Germany, out of Autonomism. Autonomism is an anti-authoritarian anarcho-Marxist ideology associated with the Communist urban guerilla organizations of 1970s and ’80s Europe like Red Army Faction and the Red Brigade. Autonomism would find a home among the young punks of Germany’s squatters’ rights movement. Around this time, Antifa tactics like the “black block,” where large numbers of rioters dress in black and move together in formation as part of a larger protest, were developed.

Coming to America

Antifa would form in a similar fashion in the United States, but under a different name.

According to Antifa lore, an effort by young punks to expel neo-Nazis and white supremacists from the music scene led to the formation of Anti-Racist Action (ARA), beginning in the Midwest and then spreading outward. As chapters formed in various cities, regional councils and networks were formed, such as the Midwest Anti-Fascist Network (MAFN) in 1995.

But present at the birth of ARA were members of America’s long-time revolutionary clique, with roots going all the way back to the domestic terror group Weather Underground. Consulting the young anti-racist punks in the formation of ARA were members of the John Brown Anti-Klan Committee (JBAKC). Several separate ARAs would go on to form one of the largest Antifa networks in the country, Torch Antifa, whose website was registered by a former JBAKC member.

JBAKC was formed as a front for the May 19th Communist Organization (MCO), itself founded out of the remnants of the Weather Underground, Black Liberation Army, the FALN and other terrorist groups of the ’60s and ’70s. (May 19 was chosen since it was the birthday of both Malcolm X and Ho Chi Minh.)

Following a split in the Weather Underground leadership over whether to emphasize class or racial struggle, the MCO emphasized working for “black liberation.” Members of the MCO were responsible for several bombings and robberies in the 1980s, including the infamous 1981 Brinks Armored Car Robbery.

JBAKC used its newsletter “Death to the Klan!” to highlight street fighting with Klansmen, accuse Reagan officials of white supremacy, endorse MCO bank robberies as “expropriation,” and promote communist insurgencies taking place in Nicaragua and El Salvador. It is important, again, to keep in mind that this was all done under the guise of “fighting white supremacy.”

The logic of JBAKC and the May 19th Communist Organization, and the same ideology which drives Antifa today, was that at its core the United States was founded on white supremacy, and therefore needs to be destroyed. Their “Cops and Klan Go Hand in Hand” slogan suggests there is no distinction between neo-Nazis and America’s institutions.

Antifa Today

Of course, in the age of the 1619 Project, such positions are no longer held just by members of underground Communist terror organizations. They are de rigueur in newsrooms, faculty lounges, and among the staff of mayors’ and attorneys general’s offices.

The modern Antifa movement advances the robust legacy infrastructure of the revolutionary Left through a belief in the efficacy of loose organization. The basic building block of direct-action organizing is the “affinity group,” which is exactly what it sounds like: a group of like-minded people who share a common objective. Pro-Antifa website CrimethInc notes:

This leaderless format has proven effective for guerrilla activities of all kinds, as well as what the RAND Corporation calls “swarming” tactics in which many unpredictable autonomous groups overwhelm a centralized adversary. You should go to every demonstration in an affinity group, with a shared sense of your goals and capabilities. If you are in an affinity group that has experience taking action together, you will be much better prepared to deal with emergencies and make the most of unexpected opportunities.

Multiple affinity groups can organize into what are described as “clusters” of affinity groups. Members of individual affinity groups may be members of other radical Left organizations and call upon them for assistance. Antifa members are likely to have ties to political organizations with Antifa support committees such as the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), The International Workers of the World (Wobblies), the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP), or any number of other local and regional radical Left organizations or collectives. Antifa draws resources and recruits from them all.

Where necessary, multiple clusters planning large actions may utilize “spokes-councils” to coordinate. Each affinity group or cluster may send spokespersons to negotiate on the general goals of the action. These methods are no less organized for being non-hierarchical and help Antifa avoid police and law enforcement investigations, as well as preserve the above-ground support structures from facing criminal consequences for the acts they enable.

Antifa is in many ways an improved iteration of prior militant leftist guerilla organizations. While the Weather Underground wrote high-profile manifestos and their members became household names, they were also forced into hiding by aggressive, but largely traditional, law enforcement methods. In part, they failed because they misjudged how ready society was for their message, banked everything on militant action, and gave up mass organizing. Antifa, with its anarchist outer structure and plausible deniability, allows the radical Left to have their cake and eat it too.

And now, with the successful promulgation of the radical message of America as bastion of white supremacy by presidential candidates, cable news anchors, and generations of tenured professors, Antifa is unlikely to lack for recruits and support—rhetorical or otherwise—any time in the near future.

In all turbulent periods of revolutionary politics, whether the 1930s, 1970s, or today, the ability to project force on the streets to punish enemies is a valuable asset. For the Left today, Antifa is that force.

Syrian migrant threatened daughter in Austria: “Marry or I’ll kill you!”

In Styria, a Syrian father threatened his daughter (19 years old) because she refused to marry a stranger.

There are about 200 forced marriages at least every year in Austria. In the meantime, 15-year-old or even 13-year-old girls are also affected – and some of them are already living in Austria in the second or third generation. Now a 49-year-old Syrian asylum seeker from Aleppo has to stand trial. He had tried to marry his 19-year-old daughter. “Someone has proposed to you”, he is said to have told his daughter. But the daughter did not want the marriage, which the father presumably wanted to arrange for bridal wealth.Thereupon the father is said to have threatened his daughter: “If you do not agree to this, I will kill you. No one will ever find out about this. I’ll dismember you and throw you in the trash.” The daughter finally didn’t know what else to do and went to the police. The public prosecutor’s office in Graz has now charged the Syrian with attempted severe coercion. He faces up to five years in prison. The young woman now lives in a secret place without contact to her family.

Austria: Syrian girl killer tries to get a lenient sentence

It was a case that triggered off nationwide great horror: The 16-year-old Manuela K. had presumably been brutally murdered by her Syrian ex-boyfriend Yazan A. He now wants to legally defend himself against the maximum sentence imposed…

In the aftermath, increasingly gruesome details had become known: For Yazan A. (20 years old) is said to have strangled Manuela out of jealousy not only with a belt. He is also said to have raped her body before burying it in a heap of leaves in Wodica Park in Wiener Neustadt. The indictment at the time implied that he had vaginal intercourse with the dead woman and ejaculated on her corpse – the magazine Wochenblick reported on the disgusting details of the case in autumn.Hours after the crime, the police arrested the fugitive Syrian in Vienna, and the first trial followed in October. The suspect denied the killing at first, speaking of an accident in which the girl fell unhappily onto the park bench. Yazan A. did not say why he himself would not have called for help in such a case. Those who hoped for a repentant confession were disappointed. The court considered his guilt as proven, after hours of deliberation the jury’s verdict followed: 15 years imprisonment with the subsequent committal to an institution for mentally abnormal lawbreakers. At the beginning of the trial, the expert witness had certified a “personality development disorder with emotionally unstable, narcissistic and dissocial components”.His lawyer Andreas Reichenbach, however, lodged an immediate appeal against this ruling, and the second hearing will take place on the 26th of June before the Higher Regional Court (OLG) of Vienna. The legal counsel primarily argues that his client was allegedly blameless before the cruel act. Therefore, the “maximum penalty was disproportionate”.At that time the crime led to a broad condolence, about 500 people came to a funeral service despite the icy temperatures. The curious thing about it is that because political right wingers also mobilized to the commemoration, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution also attended the event. Despite its integrity – which applies to convictions of less than half a year or a penalty of 180 daily fine rate – Yazan A. was known to the police even before the crime. According to media reports, Yazan A. was already known to the authorities, and a procedure to withdraw his asylum status was pending.Already in 2017 and 2018, according to the newspaper Krone, a court sentenced him to fines for assault.

University agrees that black students should graded differently

Students at the University of Washington are demanding that black students should not face difficult exams and time constraints because they are too “busy fighting for [their] rights to sit down and study”.

And the university thinks it is a good idea: It is currently advising professors to pass black students on the basis of race after an online petition gathered more than 26 000 signatures.

“You need to encourage and demand professors to accommodate their black students during this time. If UW truly understands our pain, UW will be a part of alleviating it,” the petition states.

Nicole McNichols, UW Psychology Professor told Campus Reform that she supported the move. “Obviously, I support the petition and absolutely believe the accommodations it requests should be honored by all faculty. Students need all of the support and compassion we can afford to give them right now.”

The email sent by McNichols to her students reads: “First, the remaining homework chapters are being put into review mode. Everyone will receive full points. Second, I have decided to drop everyone’s lowest exam score. This means that you may opt-out of taking Exam 3 if you just don’t feel up to it, (or if you [are] happy with your scores from exam 1 and 2).”

UW Senior Director of Media Relations Victor Balta said that all staff were asked “to consider that while we are together as a community, some are being affected more than others”.

Twitter flags and hides Trump, prefers Khamenei’s calls to destroy Israel

by Giulio Meotti

The account of the Golden Dawn party in Greece and of the German neo-Nazi group Better Hanover, to mention only some profiles that Twitter has banned for violating the rules against hate speech, antisemitism and racism. Or the leader of the Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan, forced to cancel a tweet in which he compared the Jews to “termites”.But when the Supreme guide of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, compares Israeli Jews to “cancer”, Twitter glosses over it.

Khamenei published a poster that evokes the “final solution”. We see Jerusalem conquered by terrorists. There are no more Jews and the poster is dominated by the inscription: “Palestine will be free. Final solution”.

Requests were immediately made to ban Khamenei’s Twitter account. Requests that, as we know, were ignored. Khamenei has just “clarified” on Twitter that the expression “final solution” (coined by the Nazis in Wannsee) does not refer to the Jews, but “only” to Israel. And he concluded his new tweet with the textual words: “Eliminating Israel & it will happen”. And Iran, to ensure that “it will happen.” finances anti-Israeli terrorist groups with billions of dollars.

With a letter to the CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, the new Israeli minister for Strategic affairs Orit Farkash-Hacohen asked for the “immediate suspension” of Khamenei’s account “for his constant publication of anti-Semitic and genocidal posts”. A year ago, a tweet from the Iranian leader raised doubts about Twitter’s terms of service. Khamenei had already tweeted: “Israel is a cancerous malignant tumor in the region of western Asia that must be removed and eradicated: it is possible and it will happen”.

Twitter rules dictate: “You cannot make specific threats of violence or desire serious physical harm, death or illness to an individual or group of people.” Yet, when Khamenei’s tweets are reported to the social direction, the answer is almost always the same: “There has been no violation of Twitter’s rules against abusive behavior”.

Twitter has just intervened to flag a tweet by Donald Trump against the vote by mail. At the bottom of the US president’s tweet, the social network called it “unsubstantiated”.

“These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen,” Trump tweeted shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, adding, “Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts”. “This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence,” read a gray box that then hided Trump’s tweet from public view unless a user clicks to see it.

Nothing like this has ever appeared on Khamenei’s tweets to signal his invocation for the destruction of the state of six million Israeli Jews.

We are in full algorithmic paradox.

The paradox is that the Global Times, a sort of British Pravda of the Chinese Communist Party, spreads anti-American propaganda on Twitter, which is banned in China, on how American soldiers brought Covid-19 to Wuhan last fall. Twitter, meanwhile, overshadowed the popular Zero Hedge website for publishing an article linking a Chinese scientist to the epidemic.

No less paradoxical than the announcement that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has decided against the use in the country of any Israeli product, including hardware or software. Maybe Jack Dorsey could help them: no Twitter to those who use it to invoke a new “final solution of the Jewish problem”. Otherwise, you are just a liberal hypocrite.

Greece: Migrants attack another church, migrant camp quarantined for Wuhan virus

Greece: Migrants attack another church, migrant camp quarantined for Wuhan virus

Illegal migrants attacked another church on the Greek island of Lesvos recently, throwing stones through its windows. Additionally, the migrant camp at Nea Kavala on the Greek mainland has been quarantined after the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) was discovered there.

The church, which is near the Moira migrant camp on Lesvos, is the latest in a string of churches in the region that have been attacked and desecrated by migrants, as previously reported by Voice of Europe. Makis Pavlellis, a local resident, said that “something very bad and dangerous has been going on for four months in the area,” according to a report by Greek City Times. “It looks organised and directed.”

Lesvos, which has a residential population of approximately 85,000, is currently hosting an estimated 25,000 illegal migrants, with half of them living at the Moira camp. Residents, while initially welcoming, have grown tired of their presence given the rise in incidents of disrespect, crime, and violence perpetrated by migrants.

Hungary has contributed $30,000 to help with restoring the damaged churches, as previously reported by Voice of Europe.

Meanwhile, in northern Greece, the migrant camp at Nea Kavala was quarantined yesterday after a pregnant woman tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus, according to another report by Greek City Times. Greek health authorities are now in the process of testing all of the camp’s residents.

The mayor of nearby Peonia ordered the closing of six schools where migrant children have been attending classes as a precaution. The buildings are being disinfected.

Migrants were transferred to Nea Kavala in northern mainland Greece from camps on the islands in the Aegean recently. The move was carried out to relieve overcrowding in the camps, which were considered at high risk for an outbreak of the virus. Spreading the migrants out was intended to enable them to practice social distancing measures.

Belgium: Migrant children infected with coronavirus are being sent to schools without testing

Children infected with coronavirus are being sent into the Belgian school system by the country’s asylum agency (Fedasil) despite protests from local politicians over fears it could lead to an outbreak.

The Belgian federal agency for the reception of asylum seekers refuses to have asylum seekers from the Koksijde asylum center tested for COVID-19, even though there is a coronavirus outbreak in the reception center.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak at the center, Koksijde’s mayor, Marc Vanden Bussche, decided that no one should leave the center before they have been tested. Now, it seems that despite the explicit ban, Fedasil still sends these migrant children from the asylum center to nearby schools. Now, two of those migrant children have already tested positive for COVID-19, KW reports.

A few months ago, it was decided that a disused air force base and a number of older houses in Koksijde would once again be turned into a reception center for asylum seekers despite protests from the town.

Due to the coronavirus crisis, the municipality asked Belgium’s asylum agency to postpone the opening of the center, but that was not an option for Fedasil. Not long after the reopening, it turned out that there was a coronavirus outbreak in the facility.

“Because I wanted to avoid further spread of the coronavirus, it has been decided that no resident should leave the reception center until they have been tested for COVID-19,” Koksijde’s mayor Marc Vanden Bussche to KW.

“Now, it has become clear that Fedasil has sent children to our schools behind my back. Four children went to schools in Oostende, one child to the municipal school in Koksijde, and one child to the municipal school in Oostduinkerke. Fortunately, the director notified me. Two of the children tested positive for the coronavirus! I can’t imagine the consequences if we had admitted those children to school.”

Currently, the center still registers coronavirus cases, but Fedasil still refuses to have asylum seekers tested.

“It is unbelievable that Fedasil does not understand why it is so important that all residents of the center get tested,” said Koksijde’s mayor.

“In the asylum center, people have already tested positive for COVID-19, and it makes sense that I ask that everyone gets tested, especially when they want to send children to our schools. But Fedasil perceives that as a form of discrimination,” he said.

Vanden Bussche says he is fed up with Fedasil’s stubborn and arrogant attitude.

“I am concerned that Fedasil continues to deny that there could be a problem and that they do not respect the mayor’s decision. My only goal is to keep the center coronavirus-free,” said the town’s mayor.

“The municipality even proposed to pay for all coronavirus tests. I am now waiting for a response from public health authorities, but if this is not resolved soon, I will go to court. In the meantime, there will be stricter police supervision at the reception center.”

Beligum was recently criticized for a decision it made in 2015 to destroy 63 million medical masks to make room for migrants in a storage facility during the height of the migrant crisis. Now, critics are saying the country could have highly benefited from those supply of masks during the outbreak of the coronavirus in Europe.
