The restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic will cause an €81.5 billion shortfall in this year’s central budget revenues, a bigger decline than the one suffered during the 2008-2009 global financial and economic crisis, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said on Thursday. His ministry revised the country’s tax revenue appraisal, and the figure is 10 percent lower than the original one made before the pandemic.

Scholz said that last November, the government had forecast 2020 tax income for all levels of government — federal, regional and municipal — at €816.4 billion. This has now been revised down by €98.6bn to €717.8 billion. This compares to last year’s tax revenue of €799.3 billion.

Estimates for tax revenues over the next few years have also been revised downwards — by €52.7 billion in 2021, €59.1 billion in 2022, €53.8 billion in 2023, and €51.7 billion in 2024. The tax estimate forms the basis for all negotiations over Germany’s budget.

The total revisions between 2020 and 2024 amount to a €315.9 billion shortfall — larger than the decline in expectations of tax revenue after the 2008-2009 global financial crisis.

The crisis has already undermined the German government’s commitment to a balanced budget. After six years in the black, now the government is borrowing €156 billion to finance rescue packages and cover the expected shortfall in tax revenue.

Germany — Europe’s biggest economy — is offering a total of more than €1 trillion in aid via various packages, which include money to tide over small companies and individual entrepreneurs through virus-related closures and to pump capital into bigger companies where needed.

Germany began loosening coronavirus restrictions on April 20, about a month after they were introduced, and the easing has gathered pace over the past week. The populist Swiss People’s Party, the largest party in country’s lawmaking body, has slammed Left-wing strongholds for exacerbating the Wuhan coronavirus crisis by harboring illegal migrants and rejected asylum seekers against federal law.

In a press release published earlier in week, the party not only called for the expulsion of failed asylum seekers and illegal immigrants, but blasted Geneva for contributing to the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus by harboring the migrants.

“In Geneva, there is one case of COVID-19 per 100 inhabitants,” the press release reads. “This makes the canton most affected by the pandemic of all cantons.”

The SVP, citing a survey carried out by the Geneva University hospital, says that infection rates among illegal immigrants is much higher than those seen in the native Swiss population. Illegal migrants quarantined aboard the Moby Zaza ferry after landing in Italy to stop the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus are estimated to be costing taxpayers over 4,000 euros per month each.

The ferry, which is to be placed two or three miles offshore from the Sicilian town of Porto Empedocle after around a month of pleas by the mayor of Lampedusa Salvatore Martello, houses around 250 people at a time including 35 medical staff to aid the migrants who will be made to engage in quarantine measures in order to make sure they do not have or spread the Chinese virus.

Operations aboard the vessel are expected to begin next Monday but the true costs of renting the ship were not revealed until Alessandro Pagano, a member of Matteo Salvini’s League, revealed that the government had given upwards of a million euros to the Moby Line company to rent the ferry from them, Il Giornale reports.

“The Moby Line company will receive between the €900,000 and €1.2 million: the sum of €4,210 per month for illegal immigrants embarked,” he said.

“We are not talking about a third-hand dinghy, but of a ship equipped with a self-service restaurant, pizzeria, ice cream parlour,  pub with special wine assortment, play area and video room, double or quadruple cabins with services and even luxury suites. All this while Italian families and businesses are on their knees due to the serious economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic,” he added.

The seat was in Democrat hands, vacated when rookie Rep. Katie Hill resigned last fall ahead of the House Ethics Committee’s investigation of her “throuple” affair with her legislative director.

Katie Hill won that seat in 2018 by 9 points. Garcia has flipped it from blue to red with a 13-point walloping of the Democrat. Quick math, that’s a 22-point swing toward the red in a year when President Trump is supposed to be so vulnerable. It’s a special election, with different dynamics from a regular election, but still a very significant result.

Does this look like he’s vulnerable at the moment?

He still may be, it’s a long way yet to November, but that’s not what the signs from last night say. In addition to the big win in CA-25, Republicans held a set in Wisconsin they were expected to hold, and Trump got another indication of high voter enthusiasm in Nebraska. He overperformedhis 2016 primary win, by a lot.

Trump himself put up historic numbers in the Nebraska presidential primary. With less than half the vote in, Trump has already doubled his 2016 total in the state — leading GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel to tout what she called surging “enthusiasm” for the president’s reelection.

The Democrats had a bad night. Trump had a good night. California is replacing Hill with Mike Garcia, whose resume as a combat veteran pilot is gaudy.
