The murder of a woman in the presence of her ten-year-old daughter has caused great consternation in Turkey. According to the news agency DHA, the 38-year-old had already been stabbed to death by her ex-husband in the central Turkish province of Kirikkale on the 18th of August. On Friday, video and audio recordings of moments after the crime, which is said to have taken place in a café, spread across the Internet. The woman should be heard repeating that she does not want to die. The daughter should also be heard: “Mother, please don’t die”. The woman died later in hospital. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the alleged perpetrator, who initially fled, is in prison and charged with murder. In the social media on Friday there were numerous posts about the crime, on many television stations reports ran again and again.Demonstrations against violence against women were also called for, the first of which was to take place on Friday evening in the capital Ankara. Many politicians, celebrities or institutions such as the football clubs Fenerbahce or Besiktas expressed their dismay. The communications director of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Fahrettin Altun, told the state news agency Anadolu that Erdogan was “deeply shocked by the brutal murder”. He told the authorities to “punish the perpetrator appropriately and take the necessary steps to combat violence against women”. Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu of the left-liberal opposition party CHP wrote on Twitter: “We are on the side of women and children in the fight against violence. Violence against women is also a widespread problem in Turkey.
