In 2020 The Mermaid will have been open for 600 years. We are hoping to mark that passage of time, with the recognition of certain events. Next year will mark 75 years since the end of World War 2. During the conflict, The Mermaid was used to billet Canadian Troops. In 1945 at the cessation of hostilities, one of the Canadian soldiers, Major L.Wilson, purchased The Mermaid, and operated it as a hotel, until 1959. We would appreciate any help in finding out about Major Lawrence Wilson, and the troops who were hosted at The Mermaid. We believe they were the 2nd Canadian Division. On September 16th 1942 the war came to The Mermaid…. “September 16 – At 0610 one 500kg bomb dropped on the rear of the Mermaid, bounced and exploded 20’ in the air and demolished Mr Brown’s butcher’s shop at Green Steps and damaged Strand House”
