47-year-old Senegalese bus driver Ousseynou Sy was arrested after his terrible deed on Thursday.  According to Italian media reports, the bus driver deliberately poured petrol over the vehicle and set it on fire – allegedly to express his protest about the Italian government around Interior Minister Matteo Salvini – the school children had just returned from a sports excursion when the 47-year-old Senegalese with Italian citizenship suddenly changed the route and told them that he now wanted to do something unimaginable. He tied some of the pupils with a power cable and took their mobile phones. Then he is said to have shouted “Nobody comes out of here alive!  A schoolgirl reported that the bus driver had spilled the gasoline, had a knife and a pistol with him, and that, according to the public prosecutor Greco, the school bus, full of 51 passengers, rammed a car after a 40-minute hostage-taking, whose passengers were able to get to safety in time. The bus had previously broken through a police blockade. According to the broadcaster Rai, the bus driver set the bus on fire when he saw himself cornered by the police. His real intention, however, was to take the bus to Milan’s Linate airport and travel from there to Senegal, claims the 47-year-old. Several students suffered from smoke poisoning and had to be taken to a hospital. The Senegalese allegedly wanted to protest against the Italian government’s immigration policy. After the terrible deed, the government now wants to consider withdrawing the citizenship of the long-time bus driver, which he has held since 2004 after marrying an Italian woman. According to unconfirmed information, the 47-year-old has already been convicted. It is also unclear whether the bus driver was still in possession of a valid driving licence at the time of the offence. All the more the bus company that employed the Senegalese as a school bus driver is now likely to come under pressure.
