A German organization that two professional soccer players established to fight the coronavirus has donated approximately $80,000 to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland.

The WeKickCorona Initiative, established this year by Bayern Munich players Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich, gave the money after the museum asked for public contributions in the wake of the pandemic, which has paralyzed tourism.

“Auschwitz is part of our history and its memory is omnipresent 75 years after the end of the war. We are all challenged to ensure that one of the darkest chapters in human history does not repeat itself. It is a matter close to our hearts to help ensure that the culture of remembrance is upheld even in the corona pandemic,” the WeKickCorona Initiative said in a statement.

Kimmich and Goretzka, both 25, each play for the German national team as well.

More than 1.5 million people, most of them Jews, were murdered at Auschwitz, a concentration and labor camp that the Nazis built in occupied Poland.

A 40-year-old Syrian man, who became a Swedish citizen earlier this summer, has been arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of rape in Kristinehamn in the Värmland region of Sweden.

Police say the rape occurred during the night from Saturday to Sunday last week. The arrest warrant was then issued on Sunday morning.

The suspect, who is also suspected of attempted rape in a separate case, denied committing the crime, reports Nyheter Idag.

Swedish Prosecutor Pia Hammar stated that the victim is a woman in her 20s, however, she did not want to provide further comments on the case.

The Syrian suspect will not be subject to a court hearing on his separate attempted rape charge until the courts deal with his latest crime, said PHammar.

According to the Swedish Tax Agency’s information, the suspect of Syrian origin was granted Swedish citizenship earlier this summer. With current legislation, he cannot be deported even if he is prosecuted and convicted of the rape charges.

MEP Charlie Weimers of the Sweden Democrats party believes that this is another example of poor laws on granting citizenship in Sweden.

Weimers also commented on the case on social media, arguing that any migrant granted citizenship should have a probationary period in which their citizenship can be revoked if they commit a serious offense.

“This shows why the legislation must be changed so that a significantly longer break is required before anyone can obtain citizenship. And also why there should be a trial period on citizenship for the first five years. Currently, we can only — in Reinfeldt’s words — ‘thank’ this person for ‘choosing Sweden,'” wrote Weimers.

“Thank you for choosing Sweden” was an expression used by former Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt in a speech before the 2014 election, which was a phrase designed to praise migrants who chose Sweden as their final destination.

German girls and women do not feel safe in major German cities and are often victims of sexual assault. This was the result of a survey with almost 1 000 participants.

“Every fourth woman has experienced sexual harassment and every fifth has been persecuted, insulted and threatened,” said Maike Röttger, the managing director of the Plan International (PI) children’s aid organisation, who is responsible for the survey.

From January to March, 970 women took part in the survey and provided information on their experiences in public spaces in Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne and Munich. According to this, 54 percent of the survey participants felt the most unsafe when they were on the road. Waiting or using public transport also cause fear (19 percent) and staying in the park (18 percent). Such fears are more intense at night.

The main reason for this is said to be scary people, especially people who have used drugs or alcohol in public. This is reinforced by poorly lit places in cities. The negative experiences of the respondents included sexual advances in the park while jogging or direct immoral, intrusive contact.

As a solution, Plan International proposed not only urban development measures to reduce scary places but also a change in role models. “Because sexual harassment, discrimination and violence are social phenomena that are often the result of the outdated notion that girls and women are less worth and the ‘weaker sex’.”

This often suggests to men that they have the right to harass girls and women, to shout out after them or to insult them, the organisation concluded from the answers. But PI did not bother to name the perpetrators of this scourge.

In a similar survey at the beginning of 2017, a third of German women said they felt more insecure than two years earlier. At that time, 34 percent felt a decrease in the sense of security in public spaces.

Cannon Hinnant, a 5-year-old White boy from North Carolina who was brutally murdered by his Black male neighbor, was shot in the head point-blank while riding his bicycle in a case that has received almost zero national media attention. Despite the dramatic death of the boy, many are pointing out that the race of the victim and the perpetrator may be a big factor why major news outlets have ignored the story.

Mainstream news networks ABC, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, along major national news outlets like the New York Times, NPR, the Washington Post, Newsweek, and Time have not run a single story about the case, sparking outrage about the story’s omission {Update: CNN printed a news blurb on Aug. 14 about Hinnant after days of pressure for the outlet to cover the murder).

One tweet on the topic from Matt Walsh has received 41,000 likes.

Jason Howerton, an editor at the Blaze, shared search results on Twitter showing he was not able to find a single mention of the boy’s name on the websites of the biggest news outlets in the US. 

Hinnant was shot and killed by 25-year-old felon Darius Nathaniel Sessoms while he was riding his bicycle in Wilson, North Carolina. The boy was reportedly killed after he rode his bike on to Sessoms’ property located on Archers Road.

The execution of Hinnant was witnessed by his two 7-year-old and 8-year-old sisters, their mother told local news station WRAL.

Doris Labrant, a neighbor on the block who witnessed the boy’s death, said, “I saw him just run right up to him and [he] put the gun right up to his head and shot him.”

The British new outlet, Daily Mail, was one of the first major publications to report on it, but the story has received little coverage from any mainstream outlets in the US with the exception of Fox News. Only local affiliates like WRAL and ABC11 have picked up the story in the US.

There are many pointing to the fact that if the races had been reversed, the news would have most certainly made national headlines.

Police are still working to determine a motive for the killing, but neighbors say they are shocked that Sessoms would murder the boy.

“Sessoms lives next door to Cannon’s father, and a neighbor said that the two men had dinner together Saturday night and that Sessoms was at his neighbor’s home earlier Sunday,” according to WRAL.

U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and Goldsboro police apprehended Sessoms who has been charged with first-degree murder.

Sessoms is no stranger to the police, and his criminal record includes a range of felonies such as larceny of firearms, a misdemeanor for maintaining a place for a controlled substance and felony possession of marijuana. Sessoms also has two pending felony counts for maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance.

A fundraiser for Hinnant’s family has already raised over $100,000.

“Sunday, August 9, 2020 a sweet soul named Cannon Hinnant was taken from this world over a senseless act,” the GoFundMe for Hinnant reads. 

“A beautiful 5 year old baby boy riding his bicycle was shot by his neighbor point blank in Wilson NC. One minute he is enjoying his life, the next it all ends because he rode into his neighbors yard.”

“He was just a loving kid,” his mother, Bonny Waddell, said to the local paper, the Wilson Times. “He had the biggest heart.”

Hinnant was set to begin attending Kindergarten the following week and had just learned how to write, according to the Daily Mail.

Despite the blackout in coverage on Hinnant’s case at many of the nation’s major news networks, the murder has received substantial coverage on social media.

Daniel Horowitz, of the Conservative Review, also pointed to race as being a factor in Hinnant’s case. Horowitz asks why race was such a central issue in the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis, but the death of Hinnant has received virtually no coverage in the national media. Although there was no evidence that the police officer, Derek Chauvin, had any racial animus, race was portrayed as the motivating factor in Floyd’s death.

“In the new America that is driven by racial politics rather than justice, what do you think would happen if a white man killed a 5-year-old black boy on his bike execution-style, regardless of racial motivations?” asks Horowitz.
