The Bellingcat phenomenon: how to declare a war against free speech and be awarded for ‘advances in journalism’

At the end of March an American journalist Brenna T. Smith published a controversial article which consisted of revealing the personal data of people who took part in the storming of the US Capitol on January 6.

Some of these people are still trying to raise money for lawyers through crowdfunding, but Brenna swiftly counteracted their move by calling them “extremists”. In the USA Today article, she called for the banning of such people from crowdfunding platforms, leaving them without any opportunity of raising money in order to hire lawyers and legal representatives.

The main reason the American journalist is behaving this way, is that these people hold views she does not share. They are “right-wing” and “alt-right”, and therefore should be denied the opportunity to get highly qualified and therefore expensive legal council.

Smith’s Twitter bio mentions that she previously worked for Bellingcat. Moreover, Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins was one among the first to support her in her fight against the Capitol protesters’ attempts to seek legal protection.

Higgins defended the journalist from criticism, saying that what she was doing had nothing to do with doxxing.

At the same time, many observers noted that Brenna Smith and Bellingcat supported the Black Lives Matter protests and were not opposed to their participants raising money for themselves. Now, however, they want to deprive the protesters at the US Capitol of the same opportunity.

According to some experts and commentators, Smith and Higgins is simply doing what they typically do: Bellingcat is known in particular for his shameless ideological bias and double standards.

“Some of the worst Antifa media ghouls work/have worked for Bellingcat, which is a CIA funded disinformation outfit. The ‘journalist’ Brenna T. Smith trying to deny Proud Boys and patriots their right to a legal defense was piped into the USA Today and soon the New York Times from there. The insufferable Antifa weasel Robert Evans is still at Bellingcat,” Eric Striker, an American journalist and blogger, wrote on his Telegram.

Even Glenn Greenwald who was the co-funder of the news organization Intercept which provided similar content as Bellingcat, was forced to acknowledge that “the only purpose of the Smith’s article was to pressure and shame tech companies to do more of blocking against these ‘criminal defendants’ from being able to raise funds for their legal fees, and to tattle to tech companies by showing them what techniques these indigent defendants are using to raise money online”.

The case of Brenna Smith is significant not only because it demonstrates the ideological bias of mainstream Western media and pseudo-independent “investigators” like Bellingcat. This case shows that the activity of such groups such as Bellingcat is dangerous for rights and freedoms in the West. Brenna Smith used to work for Eliot Higgins and was guided in her first “investigation” for USA Today by the same principles which were accepted by Bellingcat. However, until recently, Bellingcat had mostly been investigating Russians, and therefore the question of compliance with ethical standards or even legal norms of law were not raised in the West.

For example, in the investigation into the “poisoning” of Alexey Navalny, Bellingcat constantly refered to the information from the “sources” who had provided Bellingcat with personal data from certain people (Bellingcat stated that these people were employees of the Russian state security institutions). These “sources” provided illegally obtained data. Either they were stolen by order of Bellingcat, or Bellingcat bought stolen data. However, the illegal origin of the information does not embarrass Bellingcat as their sacred aim is to expose the Russian state.

Besides the questionable ethical side of the investigation and blatant violation of the law, the data which Bellingcat had obtained from “sources” has one more significant flaw. It is impossible to verify it.

This applies, for instance, to the case of the murder of Chechen Islamist Zelimkhan Khangoshvili in Berlin in 2019. After having carefully read all the testimonies of Bellingcat, it turns out that the investigators pass off their assumptions as facts. These are based on references to anonymous sources with access to anonymous databases and some photos and scans of documents, the reliability of which cannot be verified, or to metadata, which have allegedly been changed. And this metadata was either obtained illegally, or there was no metadata at all, or it could have been forged.

All the arguments of Bellingcat are based on the use of “sources” and closed databases, as well as on mobile phone billing. However, the billing can also be faked. And the databases need to be verified, witnesses need to be heard in order to confirm the relevance and reliability of the provided information. There is no other way to confirm the data.

Another point about Bellingcat’s questionable sources is a fact that these sources are never named. An interesting situation came up when Bellingcat’s investigator Christo Grozev claimed that he had been a close witness for the prosecution at the Khanhoshvili murder trial in Berlin. His perhaps imaginary “sources”, not himself, had witnessed the Islamist being killed by the Russian state.

According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Groziev even candidly revealed that he had used “bribery” for his investigation.

Thus, for now it is not just a nameless Russian which is being put on trial in Berlin, but an effort to legitimize the dubious methods used by this organization.

Doubtful, unverifiable information resulted in heated discussions in German court, but in response Bellingcat quickly published data from the Ukrainian special services, which allegedly confirmed his version of events. Thus, on the basis of Bellingcat’s assumptions allegedly supported only by the data of a foreign special service (eager to blame Russia for everything), a court decision could be made. After this precedent on the basis of unreliable data, thrown in from Bellingcat and other kindred organizations, it might become possible to convict anyone using “closed witnesses”. And there is no guarantee that these shady figures will be reliable.

Using Bellingcat’s material in court and referring to the investigators as “witnesses” is a convenient ploy for the prosecution in Germany, which itself could not find arguments to justify the connection between Russia and the person accused in the murder of Khangoshvili. The prosecution would have been forced to reveal its sources in court or admit that they had no evidence. However, with references to the authority of Bellingcat, and investigators being allowed to cite their mysterious sources in Russia, no event can be verified. It also allows for legalizing a possible leak of unverifiable intelligence information, which due to its illegal origin (hacking, wiretapping, surveillance) cannot be used in court as evidence. However, thanks to Bellingcat this unreliable information can now be laundered, much like dirty money.

The situation with the trial on Khangoshvili’s murder opens up the possibility of breaking laws in order to spy on Russians or throw in evidence convenient for a foreign intelligence outfit. Soon, such private agencies or under-cover secret services will legitimize surveillance of dissenters in Europe as well as the USA.

It is worth mentioning that Bellingcat is already actively engaged in fighting the opponents of the current western liberal mainstream represented by the supporters of QAnon and the opponents of radical extremist Antifa. They are also accusing participants of the Capitol assault of “Nazism”.

Another example is Alan Swinney, a participant in the August 2020 Portland protests. He is now under arrest on charges related to August 22 and because of an earlier rally on August 15. He has pleaded not guilty to any of the charges, including assault, attempted assault and unlawful use of a weapon. However, Bellingcat published an investigation on February 10 allegedly confirming the charges against Alan Swinney. As a result, he remains in custody.

The fact is that the violence during the protests in the US had been mutual: both from Antifa as well as right-wing activists. However, Bellingcat has never accused the Antifa movement; instead he is actively working against their opponents.

A suspicious example of cooperation between Antifa terrorists and Bellingcat is the investigation “Far-Right Group’s Plans for Portland Violence”, where Bellingcat once again openly relied on “sources” who are more likely to be spying provocateurs.

“Bellingcat has acquired several months of chat logs from the Patriot Coalition of Oregon, a network of pro-Trump, pro-police activists. These chat logs were provided by an infiltrator affiliated with the antifascist collective Eugene Antifa. We were also given login information for the infiltrator’s account on GroupMe, a secure messaging app owned by Microsoft,” Bellingcat investigators Robert Evans and Jason Wilson openly admitted.

Bellingcat is supported by mainstream NGOs and Western governments. The evidence is always revealed in the same fashion: whatever Bellingcat is doing or investigating, the mainstream media in Western countries applaud him without fail and governments as well as NGOs routinely shower him with awards and other forms of encouragement. A curious example is the recent inclusion of Bellingcat into the long list of the Orwell Prize. It is the Orwell Foundation, which gives this prize. Its chair – Lord Ken Macdonald QC – is an embodiment of the British establishment. He is a former defence lawyer and the Director of Public Prosecutions. “His clients have included international media organisations, prominent British banks, major foreign defence corporations,” reads his official bio on the foundation’s website.

Another example is the Machiavelli Award, which Bellingcat received in 2020. The board of this organization includes Wim van der Weegen – the Director of Communications at the Ministry of Defence of Netherlands, Marjan Hammersma – the Secretary-general of Media and Culture at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science of the Dutch government and several deputies from mainstream Dutch parliamentary parties.

And that is does not include the grants from the National Endowement for Democracy, funded by the US Congress, or Open Society Foundations. It is known that Bellingcat receives money from the British Foreign Office and is also a partner of an Open Information Partnership funded by Foreign Office. Bellingcat is also a partner in the Zinc Network’s UK FCO-funded EXPOSE Consortium.

Thus, it is blindingly obvious that Bellingcat and similar structures act in the interest of the globalist liberal establishment. The European and American activists who have patriotic position are the internal enemy for such structures, which are tightly connected to the Deep State mechanisms. And, as judged from the behaviour of Bellingcat, which is actively attempting to subvert courts, one should expect that fresh repression against opponents of left-liberal globalism will be wholly supported and promoted by Western investigative organizations.

Palestinian clan goes on the rampage in the Charité hospital in Berlin, Germany

Men from a well-known extended family went on the rampage at the Charité hospital in Berlin – triggering a police operation. According to information from the newspaper Tagesspiegel, the men are members of the Abou Chaker clan of Palestinian origin. According to the report, the men threatened the security guards and possibly also hit them. According to unconfirmed information, they also attacked a senior doctor.

The incident happened on Tuesday on the campus in the Mitte district.A police spokesperson said there had been a police operation at the Charité rescue centre in Mitte: About ten men allegedly tried to enter the hospital shortly before 5 p.m. on Tuesday to say goodbye to a deceased relative.

Due to infection control, visits are currently only permitted in exceptional cases. This has applied – with interruptions – to all clinics since the beginning of the pandemic. Eventually, according to a person familiar with the matter, the situation calmed down – the men were then allowed access individually to say the final farewell to their deceased relative. Charité circles said they were considering filing a complaint.

Time and again, men from the clan milieu have attacked not only police officers and employees of the public order office, but also health care workers. In addition to paramedics who are on duty all over the city, in-patient staff in the clinics are also attacked.

What is the life of a German senior citizen really worth? Iraqi brutally kicks 92-year-old woman to death and the court sentences him to only 3 years in juvenile detention

After the violent death of a senior citizen, the Hof Regional Court sentenced an 18-year-old Iraqi man to a juvenile sentence of three years for intentional intoxication. A conviction for manslaughter was not possible, the court emphasised.

The crime caused horror and left neighbours stunned: In September 2020, a 92-year-old senior citizen had been found dead in her flat in Marktredwitz. A then 17-year-old had kicked in the flat door, beaten and kicked the woman, even when she was already lying on the floor. The 92-year-old died of her injuries. The young man confessed to the crime.

However, the juvenile division of the Hof Regional Court did not sentence the 18-year-old to three years for manslaughter, but for deliberate intoxication. In addition, he was ordered to be placed in a rehabilitation centre. A conviction for manslaughter was not possible, as in the opinion of the juvenile court the accused was possibly incapable of guilt due to his state of intoxication. The judgement is not legally binding.

The Juvenile Court Chamber had come to the decision that the accused had been drugged into a massive state of intoxication, which led to highly aggressive and uncontrolled behaviour. He had first consumed cannabis and later LSD.

The 92-year-old woman only became a victim by chance. She had opened her flat door because she heard the accused making noise in the hallway. This had attracted his attention. Although she closed the door again, he forced his way into the flat.

The public was excluded from the trial because of the defendant’s age. The juvenile chamber found that the 18-year-old had harmful tendencies and a considerable need for education. In addition, he is said to suffer from a considerable addiction to narcotics.

The defence lawyer had requested that the defendant be acquitted on the grounds of criminal incapacity and placed in a rehabilitation centre. The public prosecutor’s office and the joint prosecution had requested that he be sentenced to six years for manslaughter with diminished criminal capacity and that he be placed in a rehabilitation centre.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali: “It is too late for the integration of Muslim immigrants in Germany”

Political scientist and women’s rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali warns against the propensity for violence among Muslim men. Sexual violence against women is rooted in all cultures, but misogyny in the Islamic world is “abysmal and disastrous, because it makes the female sex a commodity, a thing, a prey”.

Ali made her comments in an interview with the daily newspaper “Die Welt”. According to her, some specific forms of violence are religiously justified by Islam: “Violence against women and violence against non-believers, violence against Muslims who neglect or reject the practice of Islam. Violence against individuals who leave the faith behind, violence against homosexuals.”

This exercise of violence is “permitted, even wanted, in Islam. The believers are supposed to think that they will also be rewarded for this deed.”

According to Ali, “in countries like Great Britain, France or Denmark, a startling increase in rape crimes can be seen since the wave of refugees”. This is proven by the national crime statistics. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that “violence is the norm” in some countries of origin.

Take the sexual attacks by Arab and North African men on women on New Year’s Eve 2015 in Cologne: they were not really dealt with, instead the women were largely on their own – and a signal was sent to all other women in Germany: When in doubt, the state will not protect you.

The political reaction to the sexual assaults in Cologne in 2015 was pathetic.

At that time, Mayor Reker recommended women to keep their distance from strange men as a precaution. In doing so, she reversed the perpetrator-victim role. The women did nothing wrong, they just wanted to celebrate New Year’s Eve! But the attackers behaved towards the women as is far too often the case in their countries of origin. The signal sent by German politics to the assaulting male immigrants was fatal. Instead, it should have been made clear in all clarity: You immigrants must abide by German rules, full stop!

It is too late for Muslim immigrants to integrate. They have to assimilate to the value system of Western countries.

People there live in an environment “in which all order has broken down, also due to wars. In other countries, for religious reasons, violence against women” is approved of or at least “not readily sanctioned.” However, a large part of the crimes can also be attributed to “simply criminal behaviour of the refugees”, which cannot be excused or justified by “anything, not by ‘culture shock’, not by discrimination”.

Unfortunately, the judicial authorities failed to deal with this threat. “There seems to be a reflex of repression and concealment at work. Lawyers make cultural arguments to exonerate perpetrators because they were drunk or on drugs.” The accused often argued that they did not know the laws. A sexual offence also rarely leads to deportation.

“European women are more likely to be blamed for it themselves! They are advised not to dress provocatively near refugee homes, not to go jogging alone, not to go to certain neighbourhoods anymore, so as not to provoke. And certainly not at night.”

These acts are always “about the woman’s body, it becomes a groping place, a prey”. Sometimes there are discussions in public, “but when it comes to Islam, everything is hushed up quickly, even the women concerned squirm, not wanting to be considered xenophobic”.

Many academics would be “downright afraid to deal with it in serious studies, because they would hardly have a chance of being heard. I’ve seen several such cases where researchers lost their jobs and were socially ostracised.” Refugees are basically “only perceived as pitiful victims. And victims, the conventional wisdom goes, cannot be held responsible for their behaviour.”

Ali was born in 1969 in Mogadishu, Somalia, and fled to the Netherlands as a young woman to escape a forced marriage. Because of her statements critical of Islam, she received death threats and was under police protection.

In 2012, she was awarded an “Axel Springer Honorary Prize”. She is married to the Scottish historian Niall Ferguson, with whom she has a son. Her new book was published on April 19. It is entitled “Prey. Why Muslim Immigration Threatens Western Women’s Rights.”

“Festival of anti-Semitism” – Renewed call for ban on Berlin Al-Quds march

“We must not allow the destruction of Israel to be called for on German streets,” said the president of the German-Israeli Society, Uwe Becker, in Berlin on Wednesday.

According to the police, 2,000 participants have been registered for the Al-Quds march of Israelophobes, anti-Semites and Holocaust deniers along Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm planned for May 8.

Becker stressed that “such a disgusting day of action” should not be permanently treated as a normal protest in Germany. “The day once launched by Ayatollah Khomeini pursues a clear goal and endangers the internal peace in our country.” He therefore called for a blanket ban on “this ‘festival day of anti-Semitism’”.
Al-Kuds or Jerusalem Day was initiated in 1979 by the then Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Khomeini and calls on Muslims to conquer Jerusalem and destroy Israel. In Iran, this day is an official holiday.

Former Prague imam sentenced to 14.5 years in prison for financing terrorism

Former Prague imam Samer Shehadeh will serve 14.5 years in prison for helping to commit a terrorist attack and finance terrorism. On Tuesday, the defendant concluded an agreement on guilt and punishment with the public prosecutor and, subsequently, Prague City Court confirmed the arrangement. Shehadeh was already sentenced to a ten-year sentence last year for similar crimes, so this decision will extend his prison sentence by 4.5 years.

Thirty-seven-year-old Shehadeh confessed to the act. He said that he did not regret it because he considered it right.

“I’m not a terrorist,” he said. He added that he was only trying to fight against the criminal regime in Syria, which he says is committing genocide in the country. The man faced up to 20 years in prison for possible help with the terrorist attack.

Similar to last year, the former imam refused to stand up when sentencing. He justified this by saying that he did not respect Czech law. The man has previously stated in court that Czech legal decisions are not relevant to him because they do not abide by Islamic Sharia law. However, the chairwoman of the senate, Zuzana Zápalková, imposed a fine of CZK 5,000 (€193) on Shehadeh.

The judge stated that the senate had recognized the agreement on guilt and punishment between Shehadeh and the public prosecutor because the punishment was adequate and within the possible penalty. Neither party appealed against the verdict, they could only do so if the court rendered a decision in violation of the agreement. After the meeting, the prosecutor told reporters that if Shehadeh did not confess, he would propose a slightly harsher punishment.

According to the indictment, Shehadeh flew to Turkey in 2015 where he met with representatives of the terrorist organization Al-Nusra, later known as Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (Front for the Conquest of Syria). He handed them the money he had collected in the Muslim community in the Czech Republic and Slovakia to treat wounded militants.

At the same time, according to the prosecutor Marek Bodlák, he agreed with them that he would recruit new fighters for the organization and continue to organize collections. Shehadeh also wanted to take part in the fighting in Syria himself, but due to vision problems, he eventually agreed that he would have been more beneficial to the fighters in the Czech Republic.

The indictment of the former Prague imam further accused him of supporting a Sudanese man living in Slovakia by helping him join the Al-Nusra organization. He provided him with money for equipment and with the necessary contacts and information for the trip. The man came to Syria in May 2016 and trained to become the commander of a unit of frontline attackers who also carried out suicide attacks, and fought for the establishment of Islamic Sharia law. In April 2017, according to Bodlák, he was killed in battle.

Shehadeh was already convicted of such conduct last May. The court sent him to prison for ten years. Samer’s brother, Omar, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison, and Samer’s sister-in-law, Fátima Hudková, is to spend six years behind bars. However, the couple was prosecuted as fugitives, and the court ruled in their absence. According to Bodlák, the Public Prosecutor’s Office still has no information about the couple.

The former imam was of interest to Czech intelligence agencies years ago when he urged Muslims not to attend anti-terrorist services with Christians. He left the Czech Republic in 2017 but subsequently was accused of participating in a terrorist group. Police detained him in Jordan. He was transferred to the Czech Republic in November 2018 and has been in custody ever since.

Majority of US voters believe the 2020 presidential election was rigged

President Joe Biden cheated to get elected to the White House: a Rassmussen poll revealed that 51 percent of American voters share the belief that the election was rigged.

The majority of voters believe it is likely that cheating affected the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, including 35 percent who say it was “Very Likely” that cheating affected the result.

Seventy-four percent of Republicans currently believe that the 2020 presidential election was marred by cheating, a view shared by 30 percent of Democrats and 51 percent of voters not affiliated with either major party.

FWM reported on several cases where cheating was alleged.

They also said that it was more important to prevent cheating in elections than to make it easier to vote and, by more than a two-to-one margin, American voters dismissed claims that voter ID laws were discriminatory.

Only 29 percent thought laws requiring photo identification at the polls discriminate against some voters, while sixty-two percent said voter ID laws do not discriminate, countering the mainstream media’s persistent narrative.

The survey of 1 000 likely voters was conducted on April 11-12, 2021 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.

Asked which is more important, making it easier for everybody to vote, or making sure there is no cheating in elections, 60 percent thought it was more important to prevent cheating, while only 37 percent said it was more important to make it easier to vote.

Notably, only 22 percent of voters said it was too hard to vote. Some 34 percent said it was too easy to vote, and 41 percent had no complaints.

Majorities of all racial groups – 59 percent of whites, 56 percent of blacks and 63 percent of other minority voters wanted to ensure that no cheating in elections were allowed. Similarly, majorities of all racial groups rejected the claim that voter ID laws discriminated against minority voters.

Biden’s strongest supporters were least likely to view cheating in elections as a higher priority. Of those who strongly disapproved of Biden’s performance, 79 percent thought that preventing irregular voting was more important.

After Georgia passed a new election law, Major League Baseball (MLB) punished the state by moving the annual All-Star Game from Atlanta to Denver. While most Americans thought it was bad to mix sports and politics, a majority of Democratic voters lauded MLB for making “the right decision”.

A Tunisian man allegedly beat his wife, the mother of his two-year-old son, to death after an argument

He is accused of beating his wife, the mother of his two-year-old son, to death after an argument.

Tunisian Salem M. (43) has been on trial in Bonn since Monday. Accusation: manslaughter.

Terrible scenes must have taken place in a flat in Euskirchen in the night of September 12 to 13, 2020. Here, the couple got into a heated argument.

“I could no longer control myself and I regret what I did,” the accused said via his lawyer Michael Hakner. During the altercation, he allegedly hit his wife by banging her head against the laminate floor, according to the accused.

However, the prosecution suspects that he hit the woman’s head with an object on the day of the crime. In the process, the 26-year-old suffered most serious injuries.

When he realised what he had done, the trained cook himself called the emergency services. However, help came too late for the victim; the seriously injured woman died three days later in hospital.

Already in 2018, Salem M. allegedly beat his wife during an argument. At that time, she reported to the police, but later forgave him for the beatings.
