Bremen considering easing vaccination sequence for AstraZeneca

The Bremen health authority is considering cancelling the vaccination sequence for AstraZeneca, following the example of Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The reason is the reluctance of many faced with the vaccine from AstraZeneca, spokesman Lukas Fuhrmann told the regional daily Weser-Kurier on Thursday.

It is therefore conceivable to make an open offer to all under 60-year-olds – that is, a vaccination with AstraZeneca without an invitation or appointment. However, this would only be considered if there was more vaccine from AstraZeneca than people over 60 years of age entitled to vaccinate.

“AstraZeneca is not banned for people under 60,” said Fuhrmann. The Standing Vaccination Commission only recommends thorough medical information. There is still a shortage of vaccines. Therefore, the right to vaccination does not include the right to choose the vaccine from a particular manufacturer.

Bavaria no longer prioritizes AstraZeneca vaccination either because it says it wants to use the AstraZeneca vaccine more widely than before.

In Bavarian medical practices, the vaccine can also be administered to people under the age of 60 regardless of the prioritization, says Bavaria’s Minister of Health, Klaus Holetschek. Since April 19, AstraZeneca has only been used in general and specialist practices in Bavaria.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania too, all age groups can now be vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, regardless of their prioritization. For people under 60 years of age, however, detailed advice from the vaccinator is necessary before the injection, as the Ministry of Health announced in Schwerin on Wednesday.

This means that AstraZeneca can be administered in the vaccination centres, by mobile teams or in the doctor’s offices, regardless of age or the sequence of vaccinations.

“This way, general practitioners also have the opportunity to make the vaccine available to a wider range of patients,” said Minister Harry Glawe (CDU), according to a statement.
