According to the migration organization ICMPD, the Corona pandemic has had an intensifying effect on migration pressure to Europe . “The good health care in Europe is an attraction for illegal immigrants,” ICMPD boss Michael Spindelegger told a German business daily.
“In the EU you get vaccinated for free. This is very attractive for refugees from Africa, Latin America and Asia. We therefore expect an increase in illegal immigration,” explained the former Austrian foreign minister and ÖVP politician to the Handelsblatt. Another factor is the global economic crisis. “In many countries, economic hopes are falling. Therefore, the pressure to emigrate will increase.”
The migration agency ICMPD (International Center for Migration Policy Development) based in Vienna, conducts basic political research and organizes migration projects together with state governments. For example, once a year high-ranking government representatives meet for the “Vienna Migration Conference”. Last year Germany also joined the ICMPD.
Spindelegger called on the EU states to agree on a common migration strategy. “I regret that there is still no agreement on a common migration policy in the EU, although the German EU Presidency has tried everything.” But he does not believe in a quick solution.
A survey by a German political think tank, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung,showed that migration to Europe could increase again. Accordingly, around a third of respondents in Lebanon and Tunisia said that they had thought about leaving the country in the past twelve years. The reasons for this are mostly of an economic nature. According to the survey, most were considering emigrating to western countries, especially in Europe.
