Swedish Crime Prevention Council to link youth robberies to ethnicity

The Swedish Crime Prevention Council (Brå) will soon conduct a study to see if there is a connection between ethnicity and the increasingly brutal and degrading youth robberies in Sweden.

The council maintain that they want to ascertain whether the victim or perpetrator has a Swedish or foreign background. That this initiative comes from Brå is quite unexpected. But when conservative daily Nya Tidertried to approach Brås investigators about why they chose to do this survey, they refused to comment.

The debate about youth robbery has become a hot topic in Sweden especially on social media where testimonies abound about how especially Swedish young people are exposed to this type of crime, either because they are white, blonde, blue-eyed and so on, or because they may come from more affluent areas.

Immigrant youths are often responsible for the robberies, in many cases accompanied by gratuitous and demeaning violence directed at ethnic Swedes.

On 25 November, SVT published the somewhat unexpected news that the Crime Prevention Council will take a closer look at the connection between the perpetrator’s and the victim’s ethnicity. According to SVT, Brå believes that the debate is apparently based largely on speculation, and therefore wants more fact-based statistics on what the reality looks like. The statistical reality already paints a gloomy picture on how widespread the crime is. SVT noted that in 2019, 7 741 reported youth robberies were committed in Sweden, the highest figure ever.

With the forthcoming study, Brå may be mapping themes that have been taboo until now, and their project is not uncontroversial. This was evident from the evasive answer that investigator Maria von Bredow gave SVT: “We will look at it but then we do not know what answers we will get. But where there is an identified perpetrator, we will definitely look at the background.”

Maria von Bredow refused to be interviewed by Nya Tider. And the burning question remains unanswered: Why is Brå attempting to do such a study right now? Has the general anti-immigration mood in the country lifted the taboo?
