Le Mans: Officer viciously attacked do nothing for fear of being called racist

In Le Mans, two plainclothes officers were attacked with extreme violence. One of them did not dare to respond to a black woman who was beating him because he “especially did not want to arouse suspicion about police violence”.

Increasingly surreal scenes are witnessed all over the world: After the George Floyd affair in the United States, the multiple demonstrations taking advantage of anti-racism have generated a wave of hatred against the police, and indeed a fear among police officers.

Two officers from the Compagnies républicaines de sécurité abbreviated CRS, or the general reserve of the French National Police, were attacked by a group of two women and a man. One of the officers had his leg broken. The other was attacked by one of the women, “black on top of that,” he told French daily le Parisien. He did not respond to these blows.

On the night of June 11 to 12, two CRS decided to go for a drink in a bar located in the city center of the Sarthe prefecture, after celebrating the departure of one of their own. When the bar closed, the plainclothes agents tried to intervene in a violent dispute between customers. They met at the exit of the establishment. One of them, named Cédric, decided to “lend a helping hand to people who were disturbed”, revealed the daily. The second police officer, Laurent, related the facts: “I joined him outside so as not to leave him alone. Then it descended into chaos. Cédric showcased our quality. He said, ‘We are the police, calm down.’ It did not change anything. It even had the opposite effect.”

The officers were then attacked by man inside the bar. “He [Cédric] was on the ground, in the fetus position and he received a rain of blows,” explained Laurent. He then discovered that Cédric had suffered from a double tibia-fibula fracture. Laurent is attacked next by one of the women but he explained that he did not want to repspond given that “it was a woman, black on top of that”. He added: “With the particular context of the moment, I especially didn’t want there to be talk of police violence.”

The version of the facts was confirmed by a witness as well as the prosecution, according to le Parisien.

In shock, the agent named Cédric was booked off work for 45 days. The general delegate of the Alliance police union, Frédéric Lagache, considered that these facts are becoming more frequent than before: “Some colleagues now prefer to refrain from responding to violence, for fear of finding themselves in the accused stand.”

The three people were taken into police custody and charged, two of them were then placed in pre-trial detention and the third under judicial supervision.
