The anesthesiologist and resuscitator of the Bergamo hospital in Italy has sounded the warning: “We are at the limit of our resources. And the average patient is now 50 years old.”
At the Papa Giovanni XXIII hospital in Bergamo, where Dr Lorenzo Grazioli works as an anesthesiologist and resuscitator, the incoming wave of Covid-19 patients never subsides.
To date, the doctor said in an interview with the media: “We have accumulated so many patients that if there should be a drop from here I don’t see it yet. It’s a long wave.” In resuscitation , the patients are many and “very complex to treat”.
“Our problem is where to put them. We are at the limit of our resources. The network is saturated,” said Grazioli.
Regarding the average age of the patients , the anesthesiologist raised the alarm: “The first were elderly, but slowly the age is decreasing. I see many men even forty years old. The average is now fifty years old. They need mechanical ventilation.”
He said at the moment “all those who need intubation are intubated”. But Grazioli also adds: “We have had an exponential increase in patients.”
And on the possible duration of the virus, the resuscitator warned: “It depends on us. On all of us. If we convince ourselves that we can stop the virus by staying at home, it will die down. Otherwise, no: it will continue and we will pay the consequences.”
