A 53-year-old man was first taken into custody outside the Bielefeld synagogue on Thursday afternoon. He had shouted “Allahu akbar” during a scuffle with police officers – Allah is great – and slightly injured a policewoman. In the evening he was able to escape from the psychiatric ward. The man had gone for a walk on Detmolder Street around 4:30 p.m. in the rush hour. Officers of the property protection service at the Jewish synagogue approached him and tried to persuade him to move to the sidewalk. Thereupon, according to a police spokesman, the man flipped out, flailed around and tried to flee. Several colleagues had done their best to drag him to the ground. The man, who continued to kick around, repeatedly shouted “Allahu akbar” (“God is great”). In addition, he is said to have had stones with him.The examination of the 53-year-old revealed that he is known to the police. As there were signs of mental confusion, he was taken to the psychiatric ward. He escaped from there a few hours later.
