Austria: Critics of Islam narrowly escaped beheading

“Criticism also has its limits”, a St. Pölten judge tried to explain to a defendant from the district of Tulln, who was accused by the public prosecutor Patrick Hinterleitner of having put all members of Muslim religious affiliation on the same level as terrorists and criminals on his generally accessible Facebook profile. “I am a victim of Islam. I am an oriental Christian and in 2014 my wife and three children barely escaped beheading in Iraq. Since then I have been writing critical articles about Islam,” the 61-year-old told the local newspapers before the trial. The accused, who speaks of Islamic knifemen and rapists among other things, said that he felt that he had been turned from victim into perpetrator. Since then I have been writing critical articles about Islam,” the 61-year-old told the local newspapers before the trial. The accused, who speaks of Islamic knifemen and rapists among other things, said that he felt that he had been turned from victim into perpetrator. Through his alleged generalizations he was also targeted by the officials of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the fight against terrorism, since his postings were not only globally accessible to his alleged 5,000 Facebook friends, mostly from Austria, but far beyond that. “I understand the background to such statements,” the judge said with reference to the life of the man in Iraq, “but parts of it are already massively generalizing”.
He finally offered the respectable, confessed man a punishment in the form of a fine totalling 600 euros. It took time for the 61-year-old man to agree to this, although the proceedings against him would be discontinued after the fine had been paid and he would not have been convicted. If convicted, he could face imprisonment for up to three years. Following the pronouncement of the sentence, he was again given a detailed explanation as to why, above all, the generalization in his contributions, as well as the chosen spreading of these criminal consequences implicate. Nevertheless, he finally said: “If we recognize Islam as a religion, we automatically recognize Mohammed’s death sentence against all believers of other faiths”.
