An initially normal rescue mission of the fire brigade in downtown Essen at about 1 am today had to call for police support.Shortly after 1 a.m. today, an emergency call was made to the police, stating that the crew of a Johanniter emergency ambulance on Kettwiger Street needed police support. Previously, the two rescue workers had been called to an allegedly drunk person. Later it turned out that several young women from Essen and Velbert were on their way home after a celebration together. While the two paramedics in the ambulance were trying to take care of the patient, the later accused, a 17-year-old and a 22-year-old, who live in Essen as immigrants, appeared. At first, they massively disrupted and prevented the emergency measures and presumably harassed the young women waiting at the car. Shortly afterwards, they also took violent action against the paramedics. They used a glass bottle, which they first smashed and then pushed the broken neck of the bottle towards the paramedics. While the paramedics and other uninvolved young women retreated from the attackers and tried unsuccessfully to calm them down, the first patrol car arrived. With bottles held in their hands, the young men attacked the policemen. The officers could only stop the attackers with a firearm ready. The attack continued, however, when the officer secured his weapon in the holster. With an additional police patrol arriving, both men could be overwhelmed, handcuffed and later put into police custody. Because of the assault on law enforcement officers and persons of the same standing like the paramedics, as well as other possible criminal offences, the suspects are now being investigated.
