A school in Wil in canton Sankt Gallen is under fire after staff stopped the children from singing traditional Christmas songs that celebrate the birth of Christ. The songs include the traditional ‘Go tell it on the mountain’ and ‘Fröhliche Weihnacht überall’. The staff say it was a decision taken by the new head teacher, Tobias Mattes. He told the press the celebration should be inclusive for everyone. The school does have many Muslim students – but Islamic leaders say they have no problem with the songs. The head of Islamic Organizations in Switzerland, Farhad Afshar, says its unfortunate if Christian songs are not sung in a Christian country and points out Muslims celebrate Christmas with Christians in many areas of the world.
