Two gravestones in the bishop’s crypt of St. Martin’s Cathedral in Mainz (photo above) were smeared with paint by previously unknown perpetrators. According to the current state of the investigation, the graffiti could have been applied during the ongoing divine service on the afternoon of Easter Sunday, between 3 pm and 4 pm. The colour seems to be chalk, but whether the lettering can be removed completely and without damaging the gravestones cannot be estimated at present. A criminal complaint against unknown persons for damaging public property and the disturbance of the peace of the dead was filed ex officio and the investigation is ongoing. The police inspectorate Mainz 1 or any other police station will accept information.
